18 Sep Ella Mai serves up late night RnB vibes in abundance on ‘Trip’
Ella Mai has released another smooth-sounding, easily-digestible RnB hit called ‘Trip’.
The piano-laden audio, which was released a month ago to the tune of 34 million YouTube views, is brought to life subtly with visuals that ooze a late night night drive in the city type of vibe.
‘Trip’ follows on from Ella Mai’s debut commercial single ‘Boo’d Up’. The video for that track has over 220 million YouTube views and charted #5 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, as well as topping the Hot R&B Songs listing.
Despite its success overseas, the song only charted at #52 in the UK charts. That lack of impact on these shores was odd considering its exceptional performance in America.
‘Boo’d Up’ achieved the rare feat of charting in the top five as a British artist, even rarer for a pure RnB song with no major feature. Quavo and Nicki Minaj hopped on the remix to ‘Boo’d Up’ to give it a further boost as it enjoyed an eight-week reign in the top 10 of the Billboard charts.
In an interview with The Guardian, Ella Mai addressed that imbalance: “the music industry in England doesn’t really know what to do with R&B,” continuing with: “If it were up to England, Boo’d Up definitely wouldn’t be where it is now.”
The singer and songwriter from London is signed to DJ Mustard’s label, 10 Summers Records, releasing three extended plays so far; Time, Change and Ready. ‘Trip’ could represent the first single release from a new body of work. Talking to Billboard, DJ Mustard said Ella Mai’s debut album was in the ‘mixing stages’ and that the singer was ‘done with her part’.
