Funky Friday Number 1: Dave and Fredo top the charts with a UK rap anthem

Funky Friday Number 1: Dave and Fredo have made a huge piece of UK rap history.

The duo ousted Calvin Harris and Sam Smith for the top-spot in the UK Single’s Chart. Released on Friday 5, ‘Funky Friday’ dethrones ‘Promises’, which has reigned supreme for the past six weeks.

Celebrating the achievement, Dave said: “Our first UK number 1. Speechless. One of the best weeks of my life, I don’t have enough words to thank everyone who’s helped us get here and been a part of this. But this is for us. Not for me…

“For this country and the music that we’re making all the obstacles we’ve had to overcome. So happy. Thank you to everyone that was a part of this. I owe you for the rest of my life.”

Earlier in the week, Dave’s manager, Benny Scarrs, shared some of the incredible statistics ‘Funky Friday’ has accumulated since its release: “Been a mad few days, this record Funky Friday is currently sitting at #2 on the main chart, #1 on Apple Music, #1 on Spotify, #1 on YouTube and #8 on iTunes – be historical to push this up the chart. A hard rap record you know.”

Austin Daboh, head of Shows & Editorial at Spotify, revealed some of the first-day streaming numbers ‘Funky Friday’ piled up, indicating its early potential to rival for the #1 spot. Dave and Fredo’s huge collaboration was streamed around 500,000 times within 24 hours and topped that day’s Spotify streaming chart:

“1. Dave – Funky Friday (483,269 streams), 2. Marshmello – Happier (470,878) 3. Calvin Harris – Promises (463,338) 4. Benny Blanco – Eastside (456,570) 5 Kanye West & Lil Pump – I Love It (431,507) A perfectly executed volley from Dave & Fredo’s teams.”
