19 Jun Grime sales experienced massive growth between 2016-17
Grime’s meteoric ascendency into the mainstream saw the genre out perform all others, as per data from the Official Charts.
Physical sales of grime albums grew by 109%, compared to an 8% decrease experienced throughout the rest of the charts. Digital downloads enjoyed an increase of 51% and a 138% increase in streaming, some 77% more than the respective streaming growth enjoyed in other genres.
The past year saw Stormzy’s Gang Signs and Prayers chart at number one, with Skepta and Giggs debuting at number 2 with Konnichiwa and Landlord respectively, adding to top-10 releases from J Hus, Wretch 32, Bugzy Malone and Kano between May 2016 – May 2017.
