Mac Miller Tributes: Drake, Wiz Khalifa, Post Malone, Chance the Rapper and more pay homage to iconic Pittsburgh rapper and producer

On Friday 7 September 2018, Mac Miller sadly passed away. The renown rapper and producer was found dead at his home in California after an apparent overdose. He was just 26.

Mac Miller enjoyed a successful career since breaking Snoop Dogg’s 16-year long record. Blue Slide Park, Mac’s debut, topped the Billboard album charts in November 2011, the first independently-released album to do so since Dogg Food in 1995.

The Pittsburgh native would go on to release five albums, all of which charted in the top five of the Billboard charts, as well as seven mixtapes. His final album, Swimming, debuted at number three, with production credits from himself under his favoured beat-making alias, Larry Fisherman.

Earlier on his career, Mac used YouTube and online platforms to strong effect as his brand of rap blew up in the early 2010s, alongside rappers like Wiz Khalifa, Curren$y and Kid Cudi. He also produced for the likes of SZA, Ab-Soul and Vince Staples and toured with Kendrick Lamar and Wiz.

Laid-back, drug-focused rap with a lyrical edge is pioneered greatly by the work of Mac Miller. He released his first mixtape at the age of 15 and carved out a career as a beat-maker who can rap and a rapper who could make sick beats.

Below are some of the tributes paid to him since his passing:

J Cole

As well as sending his condolences, Cole shared an open message to the hip-hop world, encouraging any artist struggling to get in touch with him if they need an ‘ear to vent to’.

Chance the Rapper

The Chicago native shared a snippet of one of his first-ever recordings over Mac’s ‘Kool Aid and Frozen Pizza’, explaining how that birthed Chance’s ‘Brain Cells’ track.
