10 Feb 2020 Oscar winners 2020: Parasite makes history, Joaquin Phoenix takes home Best Actor award + the complete list
Netflix picked up its first acting award as one of the big 2020 Oscar winners at this year’s ceremony.
Laura Dern picked up her first Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Nora Fanshaw in ‘Marriage Story’, a Netflix-produced film. The gong gives Netflix bragging rights over their streaming rivals as they have won the first acting-related Oscar award for a movie distributed on a streaming service.
Joaquin Phoenix won Best Actor for his performance in ‘Joker’, adding to his BAFTA win in the same category, with Renée Zellweger winning Best Actress and Brad Pitt winning Best Supporting Actor for their roles in ‘Judy’ and ‘Once Upon A Time In Hollywood’ respectively.
Parasite also won big, becoming the first non-English film to win Best Picture, while also taking home four awards on the night in total, including Best Director, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film.
Taika Waititi became the first person of Māori descent to win an Oscar after taking home the award for Best Adapted Screenplay for ‘Jojo Rabbit. Former NFL wide receiver Matthew Cherry also won Best Animated Short Film for ‘Hair Love’.
