16 Aug Stormzy announces #StormzyScholarship in partnership with Cambridge University
Stormzy has announced the launch of a new initiative named ‘#StormzyScholarship’, which will send two black students to Cambridge this year and in 2019.
The #StormzyScholarship will aim to tackle the lack of black students at Cambridge University, as it was revealed in June 2018 that six Cambridge colleges admitted fewer than 10 black students in the past five years, with some colleges admitting no black students at all. Oxford is said to have similar issues when extending offers to black students, making Stormzy’s initiative even more important in tackling that inequality.
Taking to Instagram to announce the news on A-Level results day, the #MERKY rapper said:
“We as a minority are still heavily under represented at the top universities and I pray this scholarship serves as a reminder that we are more than capable of studying at places of this caliber.
“Congratulations to all the A-Level students getting their results today, be proud of yourselves despite what you got and overstand that this is only the tip of the iceberg for what’s to come! This is my proudest venture thus far and I look forward to seeing some young black geniuses go on to achieve at Cambridge via this scholarship.”
Applications for this year’s scholarship close on Thursday 30 August and more details can be found here.
